**Black Water Diving Info

As you know, blackwater diving is a very specialized craft, so please be mindful of the skill level required to conduct drift dives in open ocean environments. We will have extra camera buckets on deck and extra crew on hand to help out.

These 3-day, 3-night excursions will carry photographers much farther afield than any sport diving trip we’ve run in the past. On the way out, Monday, during the day, we’ll make two leisurely “shakedown” dives to give you a chance to work out all the kinks in your gear. One of these will probably be a platform dive, and the other will be at the West Bank. But the main event takes place Monday night.

Blackwater diving focuses (literally) on photographing the small ocean creatures that migrate from the depths each night to feed on planktons nearer the surface. The variety of these animals is absolutely endless! They’re freaky and cool and bizarre.

So shortly after dark, we’ll jump divers on special-purpose drift balls. The balls will be fitted with lights to make them easy to find, and the weighted line below them will give divers a place to surface and congregate. The first dive will be at the West Bank. We’ll drop the mooring and motor up-current a ways, then drop our ball and divers (8-10 divers per ball), so you’ll drift over the bank and then off it into deeper water.

For the next dive or two, we’ll motor into still deeper waters, in the 600-1200 ft range, to hunt crazy animals there. We’ll end up diving over a canyon with 3000 fsw below us.

The next day, you’ll sleep and recover, and we’ll make at least one day dive, probably on the cervaza oil platform, which stands in 935 ft of water. Then the night-time fun begins again. First, with a dive over the “Horseshoe Basin”, which features a maximum depth of around 6,000 ft, and a central geologic feature that rises to 3000 ft deep. All this is surrounded by drop off from the surrounding ocean bottom. From there we work our way inshore for a slightly shallower dive in the 1300-2000ft range, and then finish up with a dive on the Cerveza Platform in 935 ft (this will likely be the first blackwater diving ever done on a deep water platform, anywhere in the world).

All the night dives are drift dives, so our process will include heavy use of our small boat to corral divers (you know who you are!) who get separated from their buoy lines. Obviously, this is not beginner diving. But if you know blackwater diving, you know that we’re about to log a lot of firsts. It’s not unheard of for blackwater divers to document previously unknown species of animals, so come prepared to do some really cool work and have a great time!

Six (6) blackwater dives (Monday and Tuesday nights)
Four (4) day dives (Monday – Platform, West Bank; Tuesday Cerveza Rig; Plus a bonus Stetson dive on the way home)
